There is a chance to find out how rubbish leaving your home ends up being recycled as electricity next week.

LondonWaste, which disposes of household waste in Barnet and several other boroughs, is opening its doors to show how it takes in rubbish at one end of its 15-acre site and churns it out at the other into the National Grid.

Visitors can go on a free tour of the tipping apron, where 170,000 lorries a year offload rubbish -- apparently all unpleasant smells are contained in the building.

LondonWaste, which has a landmark chimney at its Edmonton base, off Advent Way, has also opened a visitor centre.

Open days are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 3-8pm. Call 0181 884 5537 for more details.
