The current market volatility presents a good opportunity to buy shares in Rexam, the world's biggest drinks can manufacturer. Although a weaker dollar and a US strike set back interim profits, Rexam is seen as a well-run business. The price of the company's main input cost, aluminium, has fallen back from recent highs, and the firm is less exposed to swings in the metal's price as major clients such as Coca-Cola are now buying their own stocks. Investors are advised to buy at 522.5p.
Shares in miner Gem Diamonds should sparkle again despite a recent fall in the stock price, as demand for gem-quality diamonds is buoyed by limited global production. The company has projects in Lesotho, Congo and Angola, and is looking to move into Australia after raising 250 million US dollars (£125m) for acquisitions from its February float. The shares are tipped at 1047p.
Finance stocks have taken a battering in the current market turmoil amid concerns over any exposure to the US sub-prime mortgages crisis. But debt financing specialist Intermediate Capital Group (ICG) could profit from the current wave of banks selling off leveraged loans at discounted rates to free up their balance sheets as the market appetite for debt lessens. ICG could pick up some bargains in the secondary debt markets and brave investors are advised to buy the stock at 1486p.
Shares in insurance giant Standard Life are worth a look after a fall of nearly 20% since May. The company, which is expected to show improving margins at interim results this week, is also likely to be a player in the current round of consolidation sweeping the insurance sector. Analysts at Morgan Stanley have upped their target price on the firm to 382p, nearly 30% higher than the stock's current 300.25p price. Buy.
