Existing investors in Royal Bank of Scotland should take up their rights to new shares following the bank's £12bn cash call last week. Edinburgh-based RBS has taken a conservative view in judging its credit crunch losses - £8.3bn so far - and its capital-raising move means it should be better-suited to the tougher times ahead.
Shares in price comparison website Moneysupermarket.com shares have slid from a high of 215p in recent months following September's float, but there could be upside for the firm in the darkening economic climate as consumers look harder to find the best deal. With the group's other strands such as insurance and mobile telephony growing fast - and expansion overseas in prospect - investors should buy at 115p.
Social housing firm Connaught's 'one-stop shop' approach to refurbishment and maintenance work has helped it sign up increasing numbers of clients among housing authorities and councils in a £10bn a year market. Connaught has 99% of this year's revenues secured and looks a good defensive play. Shares are rated a buy at 391¼p.
Plastics and cigarette filter maker Filtrona's upbeat trading update last week should offer reassurance to investors, despite a more challenging trading environment for the business. Filtrona has won new contracts to counter business losses elsewhere and the shares are now looking cheap. Investors are recommended to hold on at 150½p.
