All that glisters is not NatWest advertising

Falling consumer confidence in banks is likely to drop a bit further because of an embarrassing gaffe in NatWest's high-profile campaign for its Advantage Gold current account.

Illustrating the offer is a picture of three hallmarked gold bullion bars. Unfortunately, the hallmark number shown is 925 - the indicator for sterling silver.

The hallmark, or assay, which indicates the purity percentage, should be 999. The clanger can be seen in most of NatWest's 1,628 branches and on its website.

A NatWest spokesman said: 'We have already taken the matter up with our design agency, which provided the artwork for this campaign.' That agency is Lida, part of advertising giant M&C Saatchi.

Maybe NatWest should call it the Fool's Gold current account.
