Petra Diamonds is shoring up its finances for a difficult year ahead by slashing its exploration budget and pulling out of its key Alto Cuilo project in Angola, following a 45% collapse in rough diamond prices in the past four months. The diamond market is expected to recover at the end of 2009, so for now investors should hold on at 83p.
Dairy Milk firm Cadbury has seen sweet and chocolate sales hold up well, despite some recent softening in its North American market.
The £550m sale of its Australian drinks business will reduce the firm's net debt by around a quarter, but Cadbury's defensive qualities seem to have been priced in by the market. The stock is rated a hold at 612.5p.

Utility firm Severn Trent is committed to increasing its dividend payouts by 3% above inflation, and provides a service which is essential whatever the economic environment.
Although the demands of regulator Ofwat on the water industry are uncertain, investors should buy at 1189p.
Medicx Fund, which invests in properties such as doctors' surgeries, is another company expected to produce steady returns to shareholders this year. The company currently owns 45 GP surgeries, is carefully managed and committed to steady expansion. The shares are rated a buy at 77.75p.
