Magners maker in £45m raid on Gaymer
Magners maker C&C Group has boosted its share of the cider market, adding rival brands Blackthorn, Olde English and Gaymers to its portfolio.
Expansion: C&C has added Olde English, Blackthorn and Gaymers to its portfolio
The Irish firm has spent £45m buying Gaymer Cider from America's Constellation Brands, gaining the other labels as part of the deal.
C&C promised the purchase would be 'immediately earnings accretive'. In recent months it has been in a battle for sales with Scottish & Newcastle, owner of Bulmers.
Tony O'Brien, C&C chairman, said: 'This transaction strengthens our position within the world's largest cider market and broadens the scope of the group's existing cider offering.'
The Gaymer operation has around 250 staff, with a distribution centre in Bristol and a production facility in Shepton Mallet.
C&C said it has no plans to change the formula of any of the brands it has purchased despite Gaymer upsetting Blackthorn drinkers recently by sweetening the drink.
