Go to a cheap supermarket or pay more for petrol
Drivers who do not live near a cheap supermarket are paying up to 5p a litre more for petrol, the AA warns today.
Petrol apartheid: Drivers who do not live near a cheap supermarket are paying more for petrol.
It reports that while motorists are paying 103.9p a litre at some outlets, elsewhere prices are as high as 108.9p a litre.
This is because some retailers have delayed passing on a dip in the wholesale price of petrol, with prices still high in the South.
And while most supermarkets had been keeping prices down, only Asda was now consistently keeping prices low, the AA report says.
Towns which have an Asda store have pump prices up to 5p a litre lower than those which do not, it reveals.
The average price of a litre of petrol has fallen to 108.32p, from 108.74p in mid-November, while the same figure for diesel has dipped to 109.86p from 110.02p.
AA president Edmund King said: 'Drivers can't expect to pay 103.9p a litre for petrol in every town, but being charged as much as 5p a litre more at the cheapest outlet in a substantially built-up area well served by supermarkets is a rip-off.'
