McBride ready for a price war

Europe's biggest own-brand household goods supplier believes it is in a strong position to survive a price war between branded rivals.

McBride, which makes supermarket own-label products such as Asda dishwasher tablets and Tesco shower gel, said sales rose 1% in the three months to October 24 compared with a year ago.

Chief executive Chris Bull, who joined from Unilever in May, said competitors were squeezing the market with promotions.

But he said this could prove beneficial because consumers would always come to expect cheaper products.

McBride issued a profit warning in June last year as raw material costs rose 4%.

But in its latest update the company (up 3.4p at 176.7p) said the cost of raw materials has risen in line with expectations, and profits will not be affected.
