Northern Foods fight over for Greencore

The UK's biggest sandwich maker has said its pursuit of Northern Foods (down 1.50p to 72.75p) was over after it had been unable to trump a rival bid for the Fox's biscuits firm.

The withdrawal of Greencore leaves the path clear for Ranjit Boparan, the owner of harry Ramsden's fish restaurants, to land his £342m offer for the Goodfella's Pizza maker.

He also increased his stake in Northern to 13.61% yesterday.

Greencore, which makes own-label sandwiches for supermarket chains, spent several weeks working on a deal with an unnamed party.
