Housebuilder Galliford Try flies high

Housebuilding and construction company Galliford Try (up 29.5p to 441p) defied the gloom in the property market by saying it would beat its profit forecasts for this year.

It has benefited from a strong spring selling season, and from its presence in london and the south east, where the housing market has remained robust.

Estate agent Winkworth, up 1p at 86.5p, reported a 28% increase in pre-tax profits to £1.1m and a 4.3p dividend.

It also gained from a strong performance in the capital, where 99% of prime homes achieved their asking price.
