Aviva drafts in ex-Friends Life boss Matthews
Insurer Aviva has brought on board Trevor Matthews as its new UK boss after Mark Hodges announced he was jumping ship to Towergate Insurance.
All change: Ex-Friends Life boss Trevor Matthews is joining rival Aviva
Ex-Friends Life chief executive Mr Matthews announced his departure last January, but formally stepped down from his post only yesterday.
Mr Hodges, a 20-year Aviva veteran, is joining Towergate as its chief executive from October.
The business has more than 4,000 staff across 100 UK offices, and Mr Hodges described his move as 'irresistible'.
He began at Aviva when it was known as Norwich Union and held several senior roles before working up to chief executive of Aviva UK, comprising the life and pensions and general insurance businesses, in January 2010.
Aviva group chief executive Andrew Moss said: 'After a successful career at Aviva I am very sorry to see Mark leave, but we understand that he wishes to take on a different challenge at this stage in his career.'
Meanwhile, he welcomed the appointment of Mr Matthews, whom he said had an 'outstanding track record of achievement' in insurance globally.
Mr Matthews was responsible for leading Friends Life, then known as Friends Provident, through its acquisition by Resolution in November 2009.
He also oversaw the takeover and integration of the majority of AXA UK's life business in September 2010 and Bupa's life insurance business in January.
Aviva said Mr Matthews would start in his new post 'as soon as possible'.
Friends Life has already hired Andy Briggs from Lloyds Banking Group to replace him as its chief executive.
