Smith Group detection sales still slow

Smiths Group gave no signs of improvements at its detection division.

The head of the business left abruptly last month after performance fell short of the board's guidance, and the technology firm said first-half trends at the unit were likely to continue for the full year.

Detection sales were down 9% in the first six months of the company's financial year.

But Smiths (down 24p at 1177p) said group underlying sales and operating profits in the 10 months to the end of May were up thanks to growth at John Crane, which makes seals for the oil and gas industry.
