William Hill promotes digital chief to top job

(Sharecast News) - Bookmaker William Hill has promoted chief digital officer Ulrik Bengtsson to the role of chief executive.
Bengtsson takes over from Philip Bowcock, who will step down from his role on 30 September but remain at the company until the end of the year to assist with the transition.

The company said the change is part of its succession planning and consistent with its strategy "of becoming a digitally-led and internationally diverse gambling company".

Bengtsson joined William Hill in April 2018, having previously been president and CEO of Swedish gaming company Betsson AB.

Chairman Roger Devlin said: "The board is pleased to appoint Ulrik to the role. Having overseen the group's digital operations for 18 months, he knows the business well and is ideally suited to lead our next phase of growth. Ulrik has deep understanding in digital and has the international and sector experience we need to deliver on our strategy.

"His appointment will provide continuity, stability and operational digital leadership as we deliver on the strategy we have set."

William Hill confirmed back in July that it was planning to close 700 betting shops, putting 4,500 jobs at risk. It said it had seen a "significant" drop in gaming machine revenues since the government reduced the maximum stake on fixed-odd betting terminals (FOBTs) to £2 in April.
