CMA halts legal action against Viagogo

(Sharecast News) - Ticket reseller Viagogo has addressed the Competition and Markets Authority's outstanding concerns regarding how it presents important information to its customers in the face of further legal action by the industry watchdog.
The CMA suspended preparations for court action against Viagogo on Thursday but warned that it had not ruled out future action if the problems recurred or if other issues were identified throughout the course of its investigation into the company.

Back in July, the CMA put Viagogo on notice that it was moving forward with contempt of court action following repeated warnings that the site had not done enough to comply with a court order the watchdog had secured against it.

However, the CMA was now satisfied that Viagogo had done enough to address the UK competition authority's outstanding concerns about how it presents information.

CMA chief executive Andrea Coscelli said: "The Viagogo website UK customers now visit is worlds apart from the one they faced before the CMA took action. Key information needed to make informed decisions before buying a ticket is now much clearer including on where you'll sit in a venue and whether you might be turned away at the door."

However, Coscelli stated the time taken to get to this stage was "clearly not acceptable".

"Stronger consumer powers are required in the secondary ticketing sector and we will continue to work with the Government on the most effective way to achieve this," he added.

The CMA complete a further independent review of Viagogo's compliance with the court order in October.

If the results of the review, or any other fresh information, suggest the company has not been meeting its obligations, then the CMA "will not hesitate to take further action".
