Trump threatens escalation after EU introduces tariffs on US products

(Sharecast News) - Donald Trump has threatened to increase trade barriers on European cars after the European Union introduced tariffs on £2.4bn worth of US goods.
After the EU levied tariffs products including bourbon whiskey, motorcycles, jeans and orange juice, European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said the EU "will do what we have to do to rebalance and safeguard" the bloc.

On Friday President Trump tweeted said: "Based on the Tariffs and Trade Barriers long placed on the U.S. and it great companies and workers by the European Union, if these Tariffs and Barriers are not soon broken down and removed, we will be placing a 20% Tariff on all of their cars coming into the US. Build them here!"

The EU levied its retaliatory measures after White House administration announced in March it would introduce 25% tariffs on steel and 10% on aluminium imports to the US from Europe. These tariffs came into force on 1 June.

The EU filed a case with the Word Trade Organisation claiming the tariffs imposed on EU exports were "pure protectionist" and "illegal".

The EU's tariffs have targeted products primarily made in Republican states, which could threaten Mr Trump's party in the run-up to the November midterm elections. They've also threatened with a second round of tariffs.

The US is on the brink of a trade war with most of its allies. Earlier this week Trump threatened to impose 10% duties on additional £150bn worth of Chinese goods after already imposing initial tariffs earlier this month.
