To aim to provide capital growth.
September was a very difficult month for the global financial market, as they fell deeper into crisis following the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and the bailout of AIG and other financial institutions in the US and Europe. Asia, led by China, fell sharply as a result of fears over continuing serious problems in the global financial system. Korea was among the best performing markets as short selling restrictions were introduced to curb speculation.
The risks of a global recession have increased significantly in recent weeks. Asian economies and companies are in a strong position relative to many of their Western counterparts and should cope with the slowdown relatively well. However, the prospects for equity returns in the region will depend on the effectiveness of Western governments' attempts to stabilise the financial system and the aggressiveness of the Asian policy response to slower global growth.
