The main US equity benchmarks are now trading ‘mixed’, with the Dow Jones Industrials being buoyed by gains in shares of IBM and Microsoft but markets, overall, being weighed on by poor revenue figures out today from a multitude of companies, such as American Express, General Gelectric, Fifth Third, Flextronics or Sun Trust.

Earnings probably grew 3.4% for S&P 500 companies in the fourth quarter, according to a Bloomberg survey of analysts. The projection is down from 4.6% last week and 6.2% at the end of last year.

Shares of Google are also holding markets back today after the release of its own results.

From a sector stand-point the best performers now are: computer services (3.41%), software (1.86%) and full-line insurance (1.13%).

MACROECONOMY

Existing home sales grew by 5% on the month in December, to an annualized rate of 4.61 million (Consensus: 4.69 million).

OTHER MARKETS

10 year US Treasuries are now falling by 12/32 dollars, with yields at 2.02%.

Front month West Texas crude futures are now retreating by 1.41% to $98.97/barrel.
