LONDON (ShareCast) - - US retail sales fall
- Citigroup beats analyst forecasts

Wall Street was down at midday as disappointing retail sales and continuing fears over Europe drove down equity values.

Retail sales in the US fell 0.5% between May and June. It’s the third straight month of weakening data on consumer spending.

The IMF said worldwide growth in 2013 would be 3.9%, lower than the 4.1% estimate released in April. The ongoing European debt crisis and weakening emerging markets contributed to the revision.

COMPANIES

An interesting mix on Monday morning.

One stock that’s caught the eye is Gannett, the publisher of nearly 100 daily newspapers around the US, including USA Today. It had climbed 3% by 12:24 after announcing profits for the second quarter that beat the market consensus. This is quite an eye-opener because some of the revenue increase has come from the internet which, up to now, has been cannibalising advertising income. A sign of things to come, perhaps?

Other than Gannett, Citigroup has had a bright day, America’s third largest bank opened 3% higher after issuing better profits than forecast for the second quarter, although it had given up most of those gains by midday, to be just 0.1% up on Friday’s close.

Engineering giant GE fell 1.4% after getting downgraded by analysts at Morgan Stanley.

Mastercard gained 2% after announcing it was to settle with a group of retailers who had complained over price-fixing.
