US newspaper round-up: Actavis, JPMorgan, Yahoo...

Date: Monday 20 May 2013

LONDON (ShareCast) - Actavis, the New York-listed generic drugmaker, is to buy Warner Chilcott in a stock-swap deal that values the latter at five billion dollars, writes The Wall Street Journal. The deal will be completed before the end of 2013 with the new company being led by the current Actavis team.

The New York Times says that splitting Jamie Dimon's jobs of Chairman and Chief Executive of JPMorgan Chase - if approved by shareholders - "would signal a shift in the balance of power in corporate America". The vote, Tuesday, could be an "inflection point" in shareholders' pushes for greater say in the boardroom, the paper says.

The USA Today writes: "When Marissa Mayer took the top job at long-suffering Internet giant Yahoo nearly a year ago, most wondered why. Now, with its apparent $1.0bn purchase of Tumblr, the latest of several savvy acquisitions, Mayer has put the yippee back into Yahoo. And investors are loving it." The paper says that in Tumblr, Yahoo is picking up the type of "cool technology" that people once associated with the search-engine group.

According to the Los Angeles Times, banking giant Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup have nearly ground sales of homes in foreclosure to a half after the US revised orders on treatment of troubled borrowers during the 60 days before they lose their homes.

New five-year farm bills could cut billions every year from current spending levels will be looked at this week after agricultural committees from both chambers in the US approved legislation, writes The Washington Post.

The Wall Street Journal says that Vista Equity Partners is to acquire Websense in a deal that could be valued at around $1.0bn.
