LONDON (ShareCast) - (ShareCast News) - Facebook-owned social media site Instagram is to take a step towards helping those with mental health and suicide issues, as it introduces a button to report instances where self-harm is likely.
Other users will have the ability to anonymously report out-of-character behaviour which may be linked to suicidal thoughts or self-injury.
The reports will be reviewed by a team from Instagram to verify and prioritise the reports in order to help those who are under threat.
"We have teams working around the world, 24/7, who review these reports," said Instagram spokeswoman Marni Tomljanovic.
"They prioritize the most serious reports and respond quickly. If someone on Instagram sees a direct threat of suicide or self-injury, we encourage them to contact local emergency services immediately," Tomljanovic added.
The service will offer support and advice to the person concerned, asking them if they would like to contact a friend or receive further assistance.
"We also consulted with people with real-life experience with eating disorders, self-injury or suicide," Ms. Tomljanovic said.
"We listen to mental health experts when they tell us that outreach from a loved one can make a real difference for those who may be in distress."
