LONDON (ShareCast) - (ShareCast News) - Nearly 90 million Facebook users will hear on Monday if their data was shared with Cambridge Analytica, which is alleged to have used the information to target political messages.
Last week Facebook disclosed that 87m users had their profile data shared with Cambridge Analytica, a UK company that aided President Donald Trump in his campaign. This was up from the initial 50m users that the company had said.

Most users are expected to be in the US although there are over a million each in the Philippines, Indonesia and the UK.

People who granted access to the quiz app "This is Your Digital Life" agreed for Facebook to gather data on their profiles which was later shared with Cambridge Analytica. The company denies any wrongdoing and said it deleted the data.

Although only 87m had their data collected, all 2.2bn users will receive a notice titled "Protecting Your Information" and they will see what apps they use and the data shared with those apps.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is set to appear in Congress on Tuesday to give testimony on the misused data by Cambridge Analytica.

The social network also last week warned that "malicious actors", namely data harvesting bots, were likely to have scraped email addresses and telephone numbers of most of its 2bn users.

Zuckerberg last week admitted to making the mistake of underestimating the power of "fake news" but denied having been asked to resign from his post at the company. "I started this place, I run it, I'm responsible for what happens here. I'm going to do the best job I can going forward. I'm not looking to throw anyone under the bus for mistakes I've made," he said.
