LONDON (ShareCast) - (Sharecast News) - Facebook is under criminal investigation by federal prosecutors over suspicions of data-sharing deals with third-party tech companies, according to a report.
A grand jury in New York has subpoenaed records from "at least two prominent makers of smartphones and other devices", unnamed sources told the New York Times.
These companies are just two of the 150-plus firms that entered into partnerships with the social media platform to be able to access Facebook users' personal information.
According to the NYT report, in June and December 2018, Facebook gave companies such as Netflix, Spotify, Microsoft, Sony and Amazon the ability to access users' data even after it had stopped sharing data with most third parties
"We are cooperating with investigators and take those probes seriously," a Facebook spokesman said. "We've provided public testimony, answered questions and pledged that we will continue to do so."
This is yet another probe since the Cambridge Analytica scandal a year ago which revealed the company had shared millions of users' data with third party firms which in turn had used them to influence the US 2016 general elections.
