The UK equity market staged a late recovery after concerns over the crisis in the credit markets prompted a sharp sell-off in the first half of August. The FTSE All-Share index shed 0.3% in total return terms over the month, with hopes that central banks would take appropriate steps to normalise financial market conditions serving to restore a degree of investor confidence. In terms of sectors, Banks and General Financials were among the poorest performers, as fears persisted about the extent of the fall-out from the troubled US sub-prime (higher risk) mortgage market. On the positive side, defensive sectors, such as Utilities, Beverages and Tobacco, all benefited from rise in risk aversion.
