Science in Sport makes three key management appointments

By Josh White

Date: Thursday 21 Feb 2019

LONDON (ShareCast) - (Sharecast News) - Science in Sport announced three key senior management appointments on Thursday, which it said supported its ambition to become the world's leading premium performance nutrition business, and reflecting the group's sustained ability to attract talent.
The AIM-traded firm said the first appointment was group strategic projects director Richard Wyborn, who had worked for over a decade as a strategic consultant and project manager at "global businesses".

He reportedly began his career with IAMCO, providing counsel to clients such as Cadbury, and subsequently worked as mergers and acquisitions consultant with Deloitte.

Wyborn then served seven years with global brewing conglomerate SABMiller, and most recently worked for Bain & Company.

His early focus would be on introducing the recently-acquired PhD brand to the United States - the world's largest protein market - and combining its operations with the existing SiS brand in that territory.

Wyborn would also develop the group's international strategy and structure to maximise opportunities in existing and new markets, with China a particular focus.

In addition, he would support existing teams on the launch of a new PhD e-commerce platform, and support the integration of PhD protein manufacture into the SiS manufacturing facility in Nelson.

Both of those projects were on track to launch in the coming months, with Wyborn set to join the business on 11 March.

The second appointment was group chief scientific officer Professor James Morton, who is a professor of exercise metabolism and nutrition at Liverpool John Moores University.

Since 2015, he had also been head of performance nutrition for Team Sky, responsible for nutrition strategies underpinning four Tour de France victories, a Giro d'Italia win and a Vuelta a Espana win.

Morton was head of nutrition at Liverpool FC from 2010 to 2015, and also supported athletes in sports including boxing and MMA.

He had consulted on a part-time basis for Science in Sport as 'world class knowledge director' in recent years.

The SiS board said Morton's focus would be to further develop new science claims and intellectual property across the group's "already strong" innovation pipeline.

Over recent years, the board said innovation had contributed to more than 25% of its revenue growth annually, with Morton set to be "key" to ensuring that strategically-important growth engine remained central.

He would join the business on 1 April.

Finally, Richard Whitty was being appointed Science in Sport marketing director, having most recently been global marketing manager for Carlsberg, leading work across its recent rebrand and football activations.

Prior to that, he spent six years with Unilever in global marketing roles on a number of major portfolio brands.

Whitty would be responsible for marketing strategy and activation across all key global markets for the SiS brand, with a particular focus on commercialising the innovation pipeline.

He would join the business on 26 February.

"Science in Sport continues to attract leading talent and these three appointments typify our focus on growth and global ambitions," said chief executive officer Stephen Moon.

"Our intent is to become the world's leading premium performance nutrition business through investment in science, innovation and brand equity and this calibre of new talent is another step in realising that ambition."
