LONDON (ShareCast) - - Banks fall after New York Attorney-General sues Barclays over "dark pools"
- Consumer spending rises less than expected
- Jobless claims fall broadly in line with expectations
Dow Jones Industrial Average: 16,846 -22 (-0.13%)

Banks cast a cloud over US markets on Thursday after New York's Attorney-General sued Britain's Barclays, alleging it favoured high-frequency traders over large institutions in its private-trading platform, known as a "dark pool."
Barclays' US-listed shares fell more than 7% after Eric Schneiderman accused it of deceiving investors by saying they were safe from predatory high-frequency traders.
Barclays said it was taking the allegations very seriously and was co-operating with the Attorney-General and the US Securities & Exchange Commission.
Other banks with similar private-trading platforms also retreated. Morgan Stanley and Citigroup both fell more than 1%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P500 and the Nasdaq all fell as Washington said consumer spending moved up 0.2% last month, half the increase that economists had predicted, although separate data showed the number of jobless claimants fell last week broadly in line with forecasts.
Initial weekly jobless claims dropped 2,000 to 312,000 in the week to June 21st, after the previous week's estimate was revised up by 2,000 to 314,000. The consensus forecast was 310,000.
The President of the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis reiterated that the Fed funds rate might rise by March of 2015.
Personal incomes increased by 0.4% in May, as expected, after a 0.3% rise the month before.
Following the figures, Barclays Research revised its tracking estimate for second quarter gross domestic product growth to 2.9% from 4% previously.
Lennar pleases investors
In corporate news, Alcoa jumped 2.7% in reaction to news that it is to buy plane-engine components maker Firth Rixson for $2.85bn in cash and stock.
Housebuilder Lennar gained ahead of the bell but closed 0.5% down after reporting flat second-quarter earnings -- albeit better than expected -- bolstered by a 14% increase in average sales prices.
Philip Morris International declined 2.7% after the tobacco company lowered its 2014 earnings guidance due to price cuts in Australia and currency movements. It said 2014 was shaping up to be a "complex and truly atypical"
year.
Homeware and baby products chain Bed Bath & Beyond led the S&P500 fallers after the retailer reported worse-than-expected quarterly earnings and sales late Wednesday. The stock closed 7.2% adrift.
Crude futures and Treasury yields slip
Front month West Texas crude futures slipped 0.79% or 0.84/barrel to $105.66 on NYMEX.
10-year US Treasury yields moved lower by three basis points or 1.13% to 2.53%.
