LONDON (ShareCast) - As many as 150,000 Japanese cars that have been sold in the UK are being recalled as a result of a fault discovered in the front passenger seat.

The vehicles, which were manufactured by Honda, Toyata, Mazda and Nissan, are being recalled as part of a global move to correct the problem, which relates to the airbag on the passenger side.

All the airbags were supplied by Japanese supplier Takata.

Honda released a statement which said: "In certain vehicles, the passenger's front airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure. If an affected airbag deploys, the increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.

“In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could be propelled upward toward the windshield, or downward toward the front passenger's foot well, potentially causing injury to a vehicle occupant.”

Of the UK vehicles affected, 59,058 were Nissan, 15,475 were Honda, and 76,000 Toyota.

Affected customers will be written to within the next 30 days.
