LONDON (ShareCast) - Building materials group Breedon Aggregates is expanding into south-west Scotland by buying Barr Quarries for £21m, saying the completion of the independence referendum had removed investment uncertainty.
Breedon says Barr, which has 130 staff at 11 quarries, five asphalt plants and six ready-mixed concrete plants, will give it a new market and complement its existing operations north of the border.
Chairman Peter Tom said: "With the uncertainties surrounding the independence issue now behind us, we believe our prospects north of the border have never been brighter."
Breedon claims to be the largest independent aggregates business in the UK after the global majors with 43 quarries, 22 asphalt plants, 54 concrete & mortar plants and three concrete block plants, employing more than 1,100 people.
Shares in Breedon rose 0.5p or 1.2% to 42p at 13:45 in London.
