CAP-XX to unveil groundbreaking 3-volt supercapacitor in Berlin

By Duncan Ferris

Date: Wednesday 11 Apr 2018

LONDON (ShareCast) - (ShareCast News) - Supercapacitor developer CAP-XX said it has developed the industry's first ever 3V super-thin supercapacitor for use in internet-of-things and wearable devices.
The revolutionary new supercapacitors, of which samples are expected to be available to consumers in August before targeted commercial production in the second quarter of 2019, will be fully unveiled at the IDTechEx conference in Berlin on 12 April.

Australia-based CAP-XX said the 3V technology is being developed first in thin prismatic form to meet demand for small, inexpensive, energy-efficient power solutions for thin wearables, key fobs and other internet-of-things devices.

"CAP-XX plans to then integrate the 3V technology into its larger prismatic supercapacitors, automotive modules and other products for high-energy, high-power applications," the company said.

The company believes that its new supercapacitors will eliminate the need for low dropout voltage regulators and buck converters which are used on the industry's current 2.7V thin, prismatic supercapacitors, thus making a saving on costs. Supercapacitors are high-capacity capacitor that can handle higher power use, supporting batteries and energy harvesters configured to provide low-power current at maximum efficiency.

CAP-XX's product will initially be targeted at markets that currently use 3V coin cell batteries which have trouble delivering the necessary power for data collection and transmission, with an estimated typical cost saving of 20-25% for a single cell and an increase in energy storage of 42% and power density of 23% against 2.7V competitors.

When the product becomes available next year the AIM traded company envisions pricing starting at less than $1 when conducted in large volumes.

As of 0857 BST, CAP-XX's shares were up 7.03% at 9.90p.
