US pre-open: Futures point to rebound as wobble in bonds market

Date: Wednesday 13 May 2015

LONDON (ShareCast) - US stock futures pointed to a rebound on Wednesday, as stocks recover from turbulence in the bond market and investors awaited retail data.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was expected to open up 50 points, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were set to begin the session up by seven and 18 points respectively.

US stocks slid on Tuesday after a sell-off in bond markets piled pressure on equities, although calm looked to have been restored on Wednesday.

"Without the menace of higher government bond yields, stronger growth figures in Europe are helping lift market sentiment and setting up for a higher US stock market open," said CMC Markets analyst Jasper Lawler.

On Wednesday, investors will focus on monthly retail sales, which are released at 13:30 BST and are expected to show growth of 0.1% in April, down from 0.9% in March.

"Consumer spending is extremely important to the US economy and therefore these numbers, more so than many others, should give us early signs that the economy bounced back in the second quarter," said Oanda's senior market analyst Craig Erlam.

The import-price index for April is also released at 13:30, while a report on March business inventories is set to be published at 15:00 BST.

The earnings season continues with department-store chain Macy and retailer Ralph Lauren set to report ahead of the opening bell, while restaurant operator Shake Shack, IT giant Cisco and department store JC Penney will publish after the close.

Elsewhere, European markets edged higher as they recovered from a bond sell-off on Tuesday, while gross domestic product data showed France and Italy returned to expansion in the first quarter of 2015.

The dollar was stable against most of the other currencies, while gold futures advanced 0.13% to 1,194.00.

Oil prices moved higher, with West Texas Intermediate gaining 0.98% to $61.35 a barrel, while Brent crude climbed 0.62% to $67.28 a barrel.
