The headline confidence index improved from -2.2 in September to -1.8 in August, according to central bank of Belgium.

Economists had forecast a rise to -1.5.

A sub-index tracking sentiment among manufacturing sector companies fell from -3.0 to -3.7-

However, all the other sector indices registered an improvement, with that linked to business services rising from a reading of 7.5 to 8.6, another which tracks construction improving from -5.7 to -4.2 and another iked to wholesale trade jumping from -6.4 to -2.2.

The Belgian data is closely watched by some analysts for early clues to the German IFO institute´s own gauge for that country´s businesses, which is usually published a few days afterwards.
