Donald Trump chosen as Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2016

(ShareCast News) - US president-elect Donald Trump has been named Time magazine's Person of the Year award after claiming a shock victory over Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House last month.
The Republican's victory in the November election finalised a dramatic rise to the top of the political ladder which left more established politicians in his wake, with the expected downfall in financial markets in case of a Trump win not materialising.

The publication chooses one person per year who has influenced the world more than any other, and they make up the cover of that particular edition of the magazine, with former winners including former rival Clinton, as well as Vladimir Putin and Adolf Hitler.

Trump told the Today show on NBC that receiving the accolade was a "great honour" for him.

"I've been lucky enough to be on the cover many times this year and last year, but I consider this a very, very great honour," Trump said on Wednesday.

The other nominations for 2016 included Clinton, Beyonce, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, cyber hackers and the CRISPR pioneers.

"I don't think we have ever seen one person operating in such an unconventional way have an impact on the events of the year quite like this," said Time's managing editor Nancy Gibbs.

"When have we ever seen a single individual who has so defied expectations, broken the rules, violated norms, beaten not one but two political parties on the way to winning an election that he entered with 100-1 odds against him."
