Trade talks between China and US ongoing, Beijing says

(Sharecast News) - Trade talks between Washington and Beijing are ongoing at the highest level, despite the recent detention of a top Chinese business executive.
According to reports, the American Secretary of the Treasury and the country's Trade Representative, Steve Mnuchin and Robert Lighthizer, respectively, talked by phone with China's trade czar, Liu He.

In a short statement, China's Commerce Ministry said the three officials talked about "the promotion of the next economic and trade consultations."

No details of the discussion were forthcoming.

Some market commentary interpreted the statement out of Beijing as a sign that negotiations aimed at crafting a trade deal were continuing despite the ratcheting-up in diplomatic tensions during the previous week after Canadian authorities detained the finance chief of Chinese telecommunications equipment maker Huawei.

On a similar note, on Monday Bloomberg reported, citing sources who declined to be identified, that China's State Council would announce the resumption of US soybean purchases in December, but the volume of purchases, whether it should be five or eight million tonnes, were yet undecided.

Also yet to be decided was if commercial companies should buy a further 2.0m tonnes and if the 25% tariff that had been levied on such imports should be lifted.
