Greater Manchester to ban fracking in effort to become carbon neutral

(Sharecast News) - Greater Manchester's council is set to ban fracking in the latest move to become carbon neutral by 2038.
Mayor Andy Burnham said the ban reflected worries about contamination of water supplies and the city's "full commitment to renewable energy", he told the Guardian newspaper.

Burnham said council leaders had seen the fracking that started in October at Preston New Road near Blackpool against the will of the local authority following a government intervention and said the environmental breaches were "a worry" concerning the possible effect on groundwater.

He said such activity around Greater Manchester would be "more worrying" as there is more contaminated land and more old mineshafts.

Several other towns such as Leeds, Wakefield, Hull and York are also opposed to the fracking of shale gas.
