Trump seeks 'large scale' trade deal with UK post Brexit

(Sharecast News) - Donald Trump has flagged up his hopes for a post-Brexit trade deal with the UK, as British politicians continued to fight over the country's departure from the European Union.
The US president tweeted on Thursday morning: "My administration looks forward to negotiating a large scale Trade Deal with the United Kingdom. The potential is unlimited!"

The UK and US has already struck a mutual recognition agreement, which replicates the current deal between the EU and US on technical standards for exported goods. That is not a free trade agreement, however.

Currently, the UK is automatically part of around 40 trade deals which the EU has with more than 70 countries. But these would end instantly if the UK quits the block on 29 March without a deal.

Despite being scheduled to leave in just over a fortnight, Parliament has yet to agree on what terms.

Prime minister Theresa May agreed a withdrawal deal with Brussels last year, but that has been overwhelmingly rejected by MPs. They have also voted against leaving without a deal, and Thursday evening will decide if they want to secure a possible extension to Article 50.

There remains, however, no consensus on an exit deal, nor on the UK's relationship with the EU post-Brexit.
