Euro area CPI dips in March, even as energy cost increases accelerate

(Sharecast News) - Consumer prices in the Eurozone dipped last month, despite an acceleration in energy costs.
As expected, Eurostat confirmed that the annual rate of increase in euro area headline CPI slowed from 1.5% for February to 1.4% in March.
At the 'core' level meanwhile, which excludes food, energy, tobacco and alcohol prices, CPI was up by 0.8% year-on-year, versus a 1.0% rise in the year before, which was also as expected.
The rate of increase in energy prices however picked up from 3.6% to 5.3%, contributing 0.53 percentage points to the headline rate of gain in CPI.
At the national level, CPI slowed by 0.3% percentage points in France and Germany to 1.3% and 1.4%, respectively.
In Spain and the Netherlands on the other hand, the headline rate of CPI rose by the same amount to 1.3% and 2.9%.
Headline inflation also increased in Greece and Ireland, but not in Portugal or Finland.
