Pompeo says Hong Kong violence would make China trade deal 'more difficult'

(Sharecast News) - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday warned Beijing that a violent crackdown on protests in Hong Kong would make a trade deal between the US and China "more difficult".
Speaking to CNBC, Pompeo stressed that he remained positive that negotiations could move forward but warned Chinese Premier Xi Jinping that President Trump had said that a trade deal would be very hard if police action against protestors resembled "another Tiananmen Square".
Hong Kong has been rocked by pro-democracy protests that are now entering their third month, after having been kick-started by a now-suspended extradition bill that would have allowed Hong Kong to send criminal suspects to China for trial.
The weekend saw further marches, with organisers stating that 1.7m turned up at a pro-democracy rally on Sunday, though official police figures offered a far lower number of 128,000 attendees.
While a violent crackdown is seen as unlikely, Beijing has been referring to the protests with increasingly harsh rhetoric and has stationed thousands of armed police across the border in Shenzhen.
