Beijing restricts movement again to curb coronavirus outbreak

(Sharecast News) - Beijing is once again shutting down public transport, cancelling flights and closing some schools as authorities attempt to control a new outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the city.
The outbreak was traced to the Xinfadi wholesale food centre located in the southwestern part of the city.

The resurgence of the disease in the Chinese capital over the past six days put a stop to normal life for many residents amid growing fears that the entire city is headed for a new lockdown.

Health officials reported 31 new confirmed infections for June 16, bringing the cumulative infections since Thursday to 137 cases, the worst new outbreak in Beijing since early February.

Although factories remain open, officials were stepping up measures to control movement around and to and from the city.

Around 60% of flights to and from Beijing Capital International Airport - over 1,200 by some estimates - had been cancelled or were likely to be cancelled by Wednesday afternoon.

All outbound taxi and car-hailing services and some long-distance bus routes were also cancelled on Tuesday.

Kindergartens, primary schools and high schools across Beijing were shut, while some restaurants, bars and nightclubs also closed.

Covid-19, which was first detected in the Chinese region of Wuhan, has now infected over 8.0m people worldwide and killed nearly 500,000. It had also forced most countries to go into lockdown and shut down their economies, resulting in one of the most severe hits to the global economy in history.
