England quarantine dropped for top EU tourist destinations

(Sharecast News) - Britons will be able to visit top EU tourist destinations such as Spain, Italy, France and Germany without having to quarantine for two weeks on their return, the government said on Friday.
The ruling which includes up to 60 countries for which the exemption is valid, will come into effect on July 10.

Transport secretary, Grant Shapps, said it was a major step in "reopening the nation".

"Today marks the next step in carefully reopening our great nation. Whether you are a holidaymaker ready to travel abroad or a business eager to open your doors again, this is good news for British people and great news for British businesses," Shapps said.

"The entire nation has worked tirelessly to get to this stage, therefore safety must remain our watchword and we will not hesitate to move quickly to protect ourselves if infection rates rise in countries we are reconnecting with."

He said countries on the list would be labelled as either amber or green, in line with a traffic-light system based on their prevalence of coronavirus.

All amber countries - including France, Germany, Italy and Spain - will have "reciprocal arrangements" in place.

But countries categorised as green, which have "very low" levels of coronavirus, will have restrictions for UK arrivals, he added.

The full list of countries is due to be released at lunchtime on Friday but will only apply to England as Scottish first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, disagrees with Downing Street on the approach.

The devolved nations are due to set out their own rules at a later date.

Greece was one of the countries to be included but it announced it was banning all flights from the UK until 15 July because of concerns over the UK's level of coronavirus cases.

The Foreign Office is also changing its advice against all but essential travel to a number of countries from Saturday.
