WANdisco wins $3m contract with large US telco

(Sharecast News) - Data company WANdisco announced a contract worth $3m with "one of the world's largest telecommunications companies" on Monday, to migrate one of its on-premises data lakes to Microsoft Azure.
The AIM-traded firm described the customer as a "key partner" of Microsoft, and chose to offset the purchase through its ongoing expenditure commitment to Azure.

It said the majority of the contract value would be recognized in 2020.

The customer's decision to migrate was driven by the benefits of the "elasticity" of cloud computing, as its compute usage exhibited large peaks and troughs during the year.

Additionally, it said cloud analytics services would promote faster and better decision making.

WANdisco claimed its solution was chosen to mitigate the "significant challenges" of moving large-scale 'Hadoop' datasets, particularly when the data in question was undergoing constant changes.

The customer reportedly considered using physical transfer devices, open source tools, and packaged software based on open-source software.

WANdisco's 'LiveData Migrator' product was demonstrated through a short production pilot, where 100 terabytes of data was moved successfully over a weekend, and was immediately available in Azure for use by analytics services such as Azure Databricks.

Aside from the initial project, the customer had more than 30 petabytes of data that would also be required to move to the cloud in the coming years, WANdisco said.

"This is a landmark deal in our relationship with Microsoft Azure," said chief executive officer and co-founder David Richards.

"Without the engineering alliance and joint efforts from WANdisco and Microsoft, the deal would not have been possible.

"This opportunity with one of the worlds' largest telecommunications companies is a fascinating case study for the power and uniqueness of our technology, with further migration potential in the coming years."

At 1155 GMT, shares in WANdisco were up 1.83% at 468.4p.
