WHO sends investigators to China to find Covid-19 origin

(Sharecast News) - Beijing will welcome investigators from the World Health Organization to start an investigation into the origins of the Covid-19 virus in January.
China, which until now has strongly opposed calls for an international inquiry, said it was open to a WHO-led investigation.

It is still unclear if the investigators will travel to the city of Wuhan where the first cases of the virus were recorded, reported Reuters on Thursday.

"WHO continues to contact China and to discuss the international team and the places they visit," Babatunde Olowokure, the WHO's regional emergencies director in the Western Pacific, told a news conference on Thursday.

"Our understanding at this time is that China is welcoming the international team and their visit...This is anticipated, as far as we are aware, to happen in early January," he said.

China has been critical of calls for an investigation in the country, despite the US claiming that the outbreak had been hidden by authorities in Beijing.

Chinese state media have suggested the virus existed abroad before it was discovered in Wuhan, citing papers claiming it had been circulating in Europe in 2019.
