Trump signs temporary bill to avoid government shutdown

(Sharecast News) - US President Donald Trump signed a temporary spending bill on Sunday night to avoid a government shutdown, the White House said in a statement.
The bill will fund the government for the next 24 hours to allow Congress extra time to pass the coronavirus relief measures and a $1.4tn government funding bill.
The White House announced just before midnight that Trump had signed the bill shortly after the House and Senate each passed the measure Sunday evening.
The continuing resolution was needed after stimulus talks hit an impasse over the weekend.
Negotiations for the past two weeks revolved around a series of contentious provisions, including aid to state and local governments, liability waivers for businesses accused of exposing workers or customers to Covid-19, and a second round of stimulus checks.
Congress Speaker Nancy Pelosi has so far managed to avoid another government shutdown since retaking the speakership in January.
Her predecessor, Paul Ryan, oversaw three government shutdowns during the first two years of the Trump administration.
