EU to propose vaccine certificates for summer travel

(Sharecast News) - The European Commission is set to propose in March a new EU-wide digital certificate that will provide proof of vaccination against Covid-19 that it is hoped will allow free travel during the summer holidays.
Brussels's aim is to present its plans for a "digital green pass" on 17 March and to cooperate with international organisations to ensure that its system also works beyond the European Union, said Reuters on Monday.

The pass would provide proof that a person has been vaccinated, the results of tests for those not yet vaccinated and information on people's recovery from the virus.

"The aim is to gradually enable them to move safely in the European Union or abroad - for work or tourism," Commission president Ursula von der Leyen tweeted on Monday.

However, it is not yet clear whether vaccinated people can still transmit the virus to others and there are concerns of potential travel discriminations against those who have not been inoculated.

The Commission said it wanted to avoid such discriminations.
