United orders extra 25 Boeing 737 MAX jets

(Sharecast News) - United Airlines Holdings ordered an extra 25 new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for delivery in 2023 and moved up deliveries of others as it prepares to replace older jets.
The airline moved up the delivery of 40 Boeing 737 MAX it had already ordered to 2022 and that of five others to 2023.
The purchase comes just months after the Federal Aviation Administration lifted its ban on the 737 MAX following two deadly crashes.
United had 14 Boeing Max 9 jets in its fleet at the time of the March 2019 grounding and was the first carrier to start receiving the planes from Boeing again in December.
The company said on Monday that it is working to revamp its fleet to meet post-pandemic growth in travel demand.
"With a number of our aircraft nearing the end of their lifecycle and the growth opportunities that we know will exist in the Covid-19 recovery period, this agreement will help us to grow as demand returns," Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said in a memo.
This will bring the total of new airplanes for United to 94 in those two years. United has firm commitments for 188 Maxes, according to a securities filing on Monday, according to Reuters.
The cost of buying new aircraft or spare engines or other aircraft improvements totaled about $24.3bn in February 2021, it said in the same regulatory filing.
