Airport slots main obstacle in EU-Italy negotiations on Alitalia

(Sharecast News) - Negotiations between the European Union and Italy over the restructuring of airline Alitalia have hit a snag over airport slots.
Both sides have been in negotiations since the beginning of 2021 on the restructuring of the airline which is set to become a new state-owned company, called ITA.

The European Commission is demanding that the carrier give up a number of slots but the government in Rome says the new flag carrier should also have its slots and part of the assets of its predecessor.

ITA has rejected the idea of giving up slots at Milan city airport where Alitalia held over 50% of the slots before the pandemic hit.

A source told Reuters that the ITA business plan has not been cleared yet by Brussels.

Negotiators for both sides will meet to further discuss the matter on Friday afternoon.
