EU prepares case against AstraZeneca for failed vaccine deliveries

(Sharecast News) - The European Commission is working on legal proceedings against AstraZeneca after the drugmaker failed to deliver the Covid-19 vaccines that it had been contracted for with the European Union.
According to sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters, a report published by Politico on Thursday was correct.

Politico reported that five diplomats would be involved in the legal action and that a majority of member states had supported the decision to sue the company at a meeting of ambassadors the day before.

Legal action had already been considered by the bloc earlier in 2021 following the company's repeated failures.

"EU states have to decide if they (will) participate. It is about fulfillment of deliveries by the end of the second quarter."

Under its contract with the EU, the company had committed to delivering 180m vaccine doses in the second quarter.

AstraZeneca's Chief Executive Pascal Soriot told an EU parliamentary hearing in February that he hoped to meet EU expectations for vaccine deliveries in the second quarter.
