FTSE 250 movers: Spire slumps as Ramsay deal voted down; Biffa rallies

(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 250 was down 2.3% at 21,949.64 in afternoon trade on Monday.
Spire Healthcare was the standout loser after shareholders voted against the company's £1.4bn takeover by Australia's Ramsay Health Care. The hospital group said that total votes in favour of the deal were 69.88% at the General meeting and 72.07% at the Court Meeting, coming in below the 75% acceptance threshold.
Travel and leisure stocks were also on the back foot amid worries about rising cases of the Delta variant as England lifted all restrictions. Cruise operator Carnival, budget airlines easyJet and Wizz Air, WH Smith and Wagamama owner Restaurant Group all fell.
Bucking the trend, waste management company Biffa rallied as it lifted its full-year earnings expectations following better-than-expected trading in the first three months of the year.
Synthomer was also trading up after the chemicals company upgraded its full-year earnings guidance as it said trading across the business has remained strong. It now expects first-half EBITDA to be around £320m and FY EBITDA to be in excess of £500m, up from previous guidance of in excess of £450m.
