US pre-open: Futures head south after Dow Jones falls just short of record close

(Sharecast News) - Wall Street futures were in the green ahead of the bell on Thursday after the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell just short of its closing record in the previous session.

As of 1230 BST, Dow Jones futures were down 0.27%, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures had the indices opening 0.23% and 0.18% weaker, respectively.

The Dow closed 152.03 points higher on Wednesday, hit a new intraday high on the back of more strong third-quarter earnings.

In focus ahead of the bell on Thursday, IBM shares were in the red in pre-market trading after reporting a quarterly revenue miss, while Tesla shares also headed south despite posting record quarterly earnings and revenues that beat forecasts.

Also taking up an amount of attention was news that the Food and Drug Administration had signed off on booster shots of both Johnson & Johnson and Moderna's Covid-19 vaccines as it approved "mixing and matching" vaccines.

On the macro front, this week's jobless claims report will be published at 1330 BST, as will October's Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index, while existing home sales for September and the Conference Board's leading index will both follow at 1500 BST.

In terms of Thursday's earnings slate, Southwest Airlines, AT&T, Whirlpool, Union Pacific and Snap will all publish their latest quarterly results.
