Euro area investor sentiment improves in February, Sentix says

(Sharecast News) - Eurozone investors' sentiment improved a tad last month but some economists spied downside risks amid the very real prospect for tighter monetary policy.
Sentix's index of investor sentiment in the single currency area improved from a reading of 14.9 for January to 16.6 in February (consensus: 15.2), reaching its highest level since November.

Claus Vistesen, Eurozone chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, Claus Vistesen, credited the improvement to the reduction in the number of infections in several countries, an easing of restrictions and the resulting better outlook for the economy.

Subindices tracking both the current situation and expectations improved.

That, he said, suggested that "markets believe economic growth will pick up from Q4's measly 0.3% this quarter and remain strong over the coming year."

Vistesen's own forecasts were for GDP growth of 0.2% quarter-on-quarter over the first three months of the year, followed by a 1.4% surge for the three months to June.

But he was quick to add: "markets believe economic growth will pick up from Q4's measly 0.3% this quarter and remain strong over the coming year."
