Twelve killed in Tehran attacks on Iranian parliament and Khomeini shrine

(ShareCast News) - Iranian capital Tehran has been rocked by gun and suicide bomb attacks on the country's parliament and a shrine to former leader Ayatollah Khomeini.
State media in Iran reported on Wednesday that at least twelve people were killed in the double assault, with a further 48 others injured.

According to the reports, Tehran's parliament buildings were stormed by four gunmen who fired a number of shots, as well as detonating a bomb.

The so-called Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, but it has not been confirmed by authorities.

Less than half an hour after the attack on the parliament, another group of attackers entered the Khomeini shrine complex, which is dedicated to the founder of the Islamic Republic. Iranian media are reporting that further gunshots and a bomb were heard at the scene.

Iran's intelligence ministry has said that it has prevented a third attack in the city, and advised citizens not to use public transport systems.

Iran does not have a major history of such attacks, with the last known incident such as this taking place in 2010 when an attack at a mosque caused the deaths of 39 people.
