Sector movers: Miners and tobacco spark higher

(Sharecast News) - Miners racked up strong gains on Friday, with cigarette companies sparking higher too.
Miners led the way on the back of rising metals prices, with Glencore, Antofagasta, Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto all firmer .

Copper has in recent weeks been among metals hit hard by the initial trade war concerns, sinking to $5,773 a ton in August, the lowest since June 2017, but broker SP Angel noted that it has since rebounded amid signs of tightness, including a drop in global stockpiles, and spiked to $6,195 on Friday.

Goldman Sachs also put out a note maintaining a year-end target of $6,500, saying that investors have priced in trade-tensions, growth remains strong across top economies and consumers who have delayed purchasing restart. The analysts said: "this week the trade war was escalated and markets shrugged it off with copper rallying. The reason is the market has already factored in an extended standoff between the US and China".

Tobacco companies remained in the news as the US Food & Drug Administration said in a statement that it was focusing on public health education to curtail youth use of electronic cigarettes.

While letters were sent to fast-growing e-cig maker JUUL and several other companies, including Imperial Brands and BAT subsidiaries, the FDA stressed that the main issue remained addressing the "high rates of youth use, company marketing practices, and the problem of the youth appeal of their products".

Companies responses will be reviewed as part of the FDA's reconsideration of the current policy for noncombustible tobacco products such as e-cigarettes, particularly products with certain flavors, that extended the compliance date for submitting a marketing application until 2022.
